LISBON
2 DAYS IN
LISBON, PORTUGAL
The magical Lisbon... where the hiking is on cobblestone, the pastries are constant, and the Vinho Verde flows faster than water. If you only have a few days in Lisbon like my family and I did as part of our Christmas trip in 2019, you can still get an amazing taste of this city. And if you do it right, your shins, liver, and digestive system will be just fine with you leaving. Here is how we did it:
EAT & DRINK
Sleek & modern (yet intimately cozy) seafood bar known for their unique and varied Peruvian ceviches and dishes with a Portuguese influence. Enjoy the fish (fresh from local markets) with a pisco sour or bottle of Vinho Verde
Small, bustling pastry shop with what many say are the best pastéis de natas in the city (the famous custard tart, served warm and dusted with cinnamon)
Striking, chic wine bar in the trendy Chiado neighborhood featuring all Portuguese wines and over 3,000 bottles covering the curved ceiling. Delicious snacks as well!
Most famous place for pastéis de nata or "pastéis de Belém" - right down the street from the Monastery where nuns first crafted the recipe in the 17th century. Worth the long lines to decide which place makes your favorite tarts!
Rooftop bar tucked into the hill behind a old church with a panoramic view of Lisbon and the Elevador de Santa Justa. Come here for lunch or a cocktail before dinner, then go back after to see the city at night.
SEE & DO
Beautiful, ornate church & monastery known for it's unique architecture and the tomb Vasco de Gama (said to be where he prayed before leaving on his famous journey to India)
WALK AROUND BAIRRO ALTO & CHIADO
Just walking around Lisbon's artsy neighborhoods is entertainment itself - cobblestone streets, colorful tiles, eccentric street art, etc.
16th century tower and fortress built to protect the city, also where many famous Portuguese explorers set sail. Now a very photogenic UNESCO World Heritage Site
Take this Neo-Gothic iron elevator up from the Praca do Rossio square area, up to drinks at Topo Chiado (or just walk around and look at it like we did and maybe catch some street performers playing nearby)
Do some people watching in this pretty square surrounded by cafes, often has farmers and holidays markets
